ISSUE #3: MARCH 2026

Hi. Hello. Welcome Back.
This one is for Dewey, our sweet senior pup.
He’s 18 years old, which is a number that makes people stop and smile and often say “awww”, which feels about right.
This issue is a little love letter to him, and to dogs everywhere. For everything he’s taught us about what it means to truly love and be loved by a dog.
Sorry cat people, we love you too.

Dewey’s Fravorite First · Now Yours

Hedgehogz Plush Dog Toy
I have a fravorite dog toy. What, you don’t? That’s silly. Get one.
It’s this hedgehog, and it was Dewey’s fravorite first. His toy basket has always had one in it. Soft and squeaky, roundish enough to bounce unpredictably, easy to carry around like a tiny proud trophy. When we traveled and could only bring a few toys, the hedgehog was always coming with us. I’ve lost count of how many I’ve bought him over the years.
Somewhere along the way I started gifting it too, because I love the people in my life and I love their dogs.
My dad’s dog Harley got one. A stray who showed up at their back door and just stayed. To this day they still say I taught him how to play with toys. A friend’s pandemic pup (perfectly named Covid) got one.
Most recently, my cousin’s Christmas puppy Comet got one. She sent me a photo of Comet prancing around with it clamped in their tiny mouth: “Omg thank you! COMET LOVES IT!” Knowing a pup is about to have the best time with this thing. That’s the fun!
Four sizes, small through XL, so there’s always a fit. Runs $7-$17 dollars depending on size, which compared to most pet store plush toys is almost suspiciously affordable. I’ve stitched it back together more than once to squeeze more life out of it.
I know it’s a little silly to have a go-to dog toy. But here we are. If you or someone in your life has a dog, send them a hedgehog.

Sniff · Sniff · Sniff

Hide the Chicken (aka “Find It”)
At 18, Dewey doesn’t tear through squeaky toys the way he used to. He doesn’t chase other dogs at the dog park anymore. He mostly goes to sniff around trees and lay in the sun, which honestly sounds perfect.
But every evening, at a certain point, he’ll just look at us. Waiting. Where’s the chicken, guys?
We call this game Find It. And it is one of the best things we have ever introduced into his life.
Here’s how it works: hide small pieces of plain cooked chicken around the house or in the yard. Under the edge of a rug. Behind a chair leg. On a low shelf. Then let your dog loose and watch them work. You can hear it, sniff, sniff, sniff, as they move through rooms with total focus and purpose.
We learned through Dewey’s training that mental stimulation is just as important and powerful as physical exercise. Dogs experience the world primarily through smell and a good scent hunt can tire them out as effectively as a long run.
Over the years we kept finding new spots as he got wise to the usual ones. Once we hung a piece of chicken on the third rung of a ladder leading to our loft. He put his paws on the second rung and reached up to get it. We lost our minds.
This works for dogs of all ages, not just seniors. Salmon, freeze dried treats, peanut butter on a bone, anything with enough scent that your dog loves. It takes a few tries of pointing out the treat at first, but dogs pick it up fast.
Now go hide some chicken around your house. Trust me, your dog is going to love you for it.

The Dogs Were Good Again This Week

WeRateDogs + the 15/10 Foundation
There’s a bumper sticker I used to walk past on my old street. White, simple. Tell your dog I said hi. I smiled at it for years before it occurred to me to Google where it came from. I assumed it was just a charming little thing from a gift shop.
Turns out it was a whole universe I hadn’t discovered yet.
WeRateDogs is a social media account started by Matt Nelson, a bored 19-year-old in 2015, who rates dogs. They always get above 10/10. Because obviously. The scale just wasn’t built for dogs.
Every Friday a new video drops. Intro never changes: “The dogs were good again this week.” Matt delivers every rating in the same calm, unhurried, completely sincere tone, like he’s reporting on something genuinely important. Which he is. I look forward to Fridays.
And then there’s the 15/10 Foundation, named for the highest rating ever given, which sponsors shelter dogs whose medical needs make them too expensive, too complicated, too much. When Matt posts about a dog in need, the fundraiser is often funded within minutes.
Also: 15% of every WeRateDogs merch purchase goes directly to the Foundation. The sticker? Buy it.

Thanks for being here. Having you along for this weird little adventure is the best part. Seriously.
